TekDrv LLC has developed the TekPlate™ Digital License Plate which will transform the automobile registration industry in the United States and throughout the world by replacing the 125 year old automobile registration identifier – the metal license plate - with a modern device that not only looks infinitely more attractive, but also provides access to a plethora of innovative technological advances that will transform vehicle use, registration, enforcement, management and enjoyment.
The TekPlate™ provides the individual and business vehicle owner with a modern technological device that can be tailored to the needs of the driver and owner within the regulations of the various statewide and nationwide departments of motor vehicles and transportation authorities. For fleet management and rental car businesses, the TekPlate™ and the associated TekDrv™ cloud-based management system will streamline their operations and significantly reduce their costs of doing business.
The motorcycle size TekPlateM™ provides added customization for providing a banner or slogan at the bottom of the plate to promote your cause or weekend ride.
All functionality for the motor vehicle TekPlate™ is included.
The TekPlate™ is a single adaptable model with a front-lit HD ePaper display, sleek, light and sturdy, with enhanced battery life and it exceeds IP8 water-tight, dust-tight and chemical resistance standards with an internally sealed motherboard/CPU and will be launched to market with a similarly designed smaller version for motorcycles and trailers, the TekPlateM™
Through reciprocity rules, license plates legally issued in one state are legal throughout North America. To get the individual states to issue the digital plates normally requires legislation or regulatory approval. The TekPlate™ automates annual registration, includes geotracking where allowable and can display custom messages.
The TekPlate™ uses a bistable digital screen, which requires no flowing electrical current to show and maintain the characters rquired by law for a license plate image.
Excluding Texas, this means that TekPlate™ will be available for use to over 60 million vehicles. Furthermore, the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Department of Transportation (DOT) has recently completed the public comments stage of a new rule amendment which would make it mandatory for all commercial motor vehicles to be equipped with “unique electronic technology capable of wirelessly communicating a unique ID number when queried by Federal or State motor carrier safety enforcement personnel.” {49CFR Part 390/RIN2126-AC54]. The TekPlate™ Digital License Plate is equipped with this technology.
The TekPlate™ will meet or exceed all requirements for sale to the driving public and fleet leasing in California, Colorado, Georgia, Arizona and Michigan and will be approved for fleets and the consumer pilot program in Texas. Maryland commenced their pilot program on March 10, 2022.
Arizona - APPROVED
Digital license plates are now available for registered vehicles in Arizona. Digital plates may only be displayed on an Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT)-approved digital license plate display device. Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) will continue to assign the license plate number and these plate characters must be constantly displayed on the digital license plate device.
California - APPROVED
In October, 2022, California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that anyone in California can now legally put a digital license plate on their car. California first started thinking about alternatives to standard metal license plates in 2013 with the passage of SB 806. The pilot program is now routinely referenced by other states as they come in line with approval for digital license plates.
AB-984 established general requirements for “piloting and adopting new alternative devices for vehicle licensing,” allowing the implementation of digital license plates by any approved company.
On September 27, 2024, Section 4854 of the California Vehicle Code was further amended to include regulations regarding GPS functionality and TekDrv is already compliant with these anticipated regulations.
Michigan - APPROVED
Digital license plates are available for registered vehicles in Michigan. The Michigan Department of State does not sell, administer, or profit from digital license plates. They are legal in Michigan but only sold by private companies and auto dealers. Digital plates serve as representations of the standard metal license plates that vehicle owners purchase and renew with the Secretary of State.
